Nicaragua, November 2017

This project will be evolving and will add new goals and objectives as we move along. We will continue to look for ways to use the gathered plastic. This will be in the form of possible construction material as seen by the photo to the left, to small scale plastic re-processing and production.

T300,000 tonnes of plastic are produced each year in Nicaragua and, about 135,000 tonnes of which end up on the side of the road, on the beach or in the ocean.

The goal of this project in Las Penitas to put in place an effective way to manage the ever evolving problem of used plastic. We are working with La Casa Verde in Las Penitas. The basic program is that people can gather plastic and bring it to La Casa Verde and receive a portion of rice and beans. The program is monitored and administered so the limited amount of rice and beans are distributed to as many members of the community as possible. The goal is to reduce the amount of waste plastic to the point that this program is not needed. If that goal does become a reality, we have plans to initiate a "Food for Community Service" program, a "Clean the Beach" program, a Reforestation program, etc.

The end goal is to change thought processes and habits, so that everywhere you would go in Las Penitas, the landscape is clean. That you can see by the actions of local inhabitants that they care about their land and are doing their part to make the world a better place.
